Therapeutic Essential Oils can be used in so many exciting and adventurous ways. Inhaling oils is a real adventure. They can be used when one is feeling ‘under the weather’ to lifting one to an euphoric state as one soaks luxuriously in a bath tub.
To inhale is easy. It only requires you to breathe in and out. How natural is that. Of course there are many little tricks that can be added to meet your desired outcome. Which I will share with you and there will be many more that could be added I am sure.
“The fragrance of an essential oil can directly affect everything from your motional state to your lifespan. The mechanics of the sense of smell have been described as working like a lock and key or an odour molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped by olfactory membranes. When stimulated, this lining of nerve cells triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. It then transmits the impulse to where the sensation of taste is perceived, to where the emotional memories are stored and other parts of the brain. This system (Limbic system) is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and hormone balance. Essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects.
The sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, the emotional control centre. Anxiety, depression, fear, anger and joy all emanate from this region. The scent of a special fragrance can evoke memories and emotions before we are even consciously aware of it.
Essential Oils – through their fragrance and unique molecular structure – can directly stimulate limbic lobe and the hypothalamus. Not only can the inhalation of essential oils be used to combat stress and emotional trauma, but it can also stimulate the production of hormones.
Essential oils may also be used to reduce appetite and produce significant reductions in weight because of their ability to stimulate a section of the brain that governs our feeling of satiety or fullness following meals.
Proper stimulation of the olfactory nerves may offer a powerful and entirely new form of therapy that could be used as an adjunct against many forms of illness. Essential oils, through inhalation, may occupy a key position in this relatively unexplored frontier in medicine.” (Essential Oil Desk Reference – Powerful Influence of Aromas – pg. 1.22)
Ways to Inhale
Aroma Sticks (Inhalers) These are a wonderful tool and perfect to keep on hand or have in your purse. My husband keeps his in his top pocket of his shirt. An aroma stick is great to take to work or use in a public place - you are the only one who smells your oils.
It is a safe and easy way to administer oils. If you go on line there are hundreds of different options, it is only a matter of choosing what works for you and the price you want to pay.
I drop my chosen oils on the wick. (There are suggestions for using up to 30 drops at a time, I put less on (10 drops) and replenish as required) If you are using a greater number of drops I suggest you put the oils in a bowl and swish the wick around with a pair of tweezers. Though be aware you will probably leave a few precious drops behind. Then use the tweezers to place the wick in the nasal inhaler, click the base into the nasal inhaler and screw into the cover. Easy Peasy!!
You are also able to make your favourite blend in the same way.
It is a good idea to make labels, even designing them on your computer. I have found some in Warehouse Stationery - Avery J8651 - 65 per A4 sheet, 38.1x21.2mm, Avery J8165 - 45 per A4 sheet, 58x17.8mm. Then of course there is Vista Print.
A note of warning - if an inhaler is placed inside the nose - do not share it with anyone else, for obvious reasons. A inhaler can be used quite successfully held away from the nose.
Remember to record all your recipes - create a system so you can catalogue them in the best way to suit your needs, making them easy to find again - leave room to add comments after they have been tried and proven.
Jewellery - as I have looked through various websites I have discovered some gorgeous pieces of jewellery made especially for the use of essential oils. Truly intricately crafted.
Wearing jewellery is a beautiful way to surround yourself with the aroma of essential oils. Again the opportunities are seemingly endless. You can wear piece on your wrist, as a pendant, or a necklace and for any occasion.
You can use the oils with medicinal purposes in mind, or choose ones that you just love, because they make you feel wonderful.
Also create your own blend and you will be thrilled when the comments come hard and fast.
Remember to record your recipe, if it is blend made especially to 'set off' your new piece!
Aromatherapy Roll-Ons (AromaGlide Roller Fitments) are so easy to use. When I give someone an oil they are always saying to me. "Could I have it in a roll-on bottle". I have now bought a supply and they can be used in your empty bottle. I take the label off and apply my own one. This is of course when I making up a blend. Though I am also finding them popular with the new bottles of YL oils
There is no wastage with roll-on and they give you brilliant control
....or just use an ordinary wooden clothes peg. Maybe one of the children would like to decorate it. Again just add a few drops of oil to it.
Add several drops of an essential oil to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water. Inhale the steam vapours that rise from the bowl. To increase the intercity of the oil vapour inhaled, drape a towel over your head and bowl before inhaling.
Direct Inhalation: Place 2 or more drops into the palm of your left hand and rub clockwise with the flat palm of your right hand. Cup your hands together over your nose and mouth and inhale deeply (Do not touch your eyes - while you actually inhaling or afterwards, till the oil has worn off your hands. An easy and often preferred method of using essential oils
